Boeing’s New Era: Leadership Shake-Up Amidst Crisis
As Boeing navigates a tumultuous period, CEO Kelly Ortberg is shaking up the company’s leadership to drive change. In his latest move, Ortberg has appointed Ann Schmidt as chief communications and brand officer, effective immediately.
A Season of Transition
Schmidt, who has been serving as interim head of communications since October 1, takes the reins at a critical time. The company has faced a series of crises in recent years, including two fatal crashes, safety and quality lapses, criminal investigations, financial losses, and a seven-week-long strike. These challenges have eroded Boeing’s iconic status, prompting Ortberg to call for a “fundamental culture change” in October.
New Faces, New Directions
Ortberg’s appointment of Schmidt is just the latest in a string of executive changes. On Friday, he announced the departure of Chief Information Officer Susan Doniz, with Dennis Eng stepping in as interim CIO. Earlier this month, Boeing’s chief lobbyist, Ziad “Z” Ojakli, left the company, while Ted Colbert, head of Boeing defense, space and security, departed in September. Steve Parker, the division’s chief operating officer, is temporarily leading BDS.
Quality Control Overhaul
In another key move, Elizabeth Lund, Boeing’s head of quality for commercial airplanes, is retiring this month. Lund was appointed senior vice president of quality for commercial planes in February, following a crisis sparked by a mid-air panel blowout on a new Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. Doug Ackerman, vice president of supply chain and fabrication quality, will replace Lund, bringing his expertise in quality improvement to the role.
As Boeing charts a new course, Ortberg’s leadership appointments signal a commitment to transformation and a renewed focus on quality and communication.
