Holiday Shopping Boom Leads to Record Returns
As the holiday season comes to a close, retailers are bracing themselves for the busiest month of returns, dubbed “Returnuary.” According to the National Retail Federation, returns are expected to reach a staggering 17% of all merchandise sales, totaling $890 billion in returned goods.
The Rise of Online Shopping and Returns
The explosion of online shopping during the pandemic has led to a significant increase in returns. Consumers have become more comfortable with buying and returning items, often purchasing multiple sizes or colors with the intention of sending some back. This practice, known as “bracketing,” has become increasingly common, with nearly two-thirds of consumers engaging in it.
The Cost of Returns
Processing a return costs retailers an average of 30% of an item’s original price. Moreover, returns often do not end up back on the shelf, leading to issues with sustainability. Returned goods are frequently sent to landfills, generating significant carbon emissions and waste. In 2023, returns created a staggering 8.4 billion pounds of landfill waste.
Retailers’ Response to the Returns Crisis
To combat the issue, retailers are implementing stricter return policies, including shorter return windows and restocking fees. Some companies are also offering buyback programs to keep goods in circulation. Additionally, many retailers are allowing customers to keep returned items and offering refunds without taking the product back.
The Importance of Return Policies
Return policies are becoming a key factor in consumer behavior, particularly among younger generations. Three-quarters of shoppers consider free returns a crucial factor in deciding where to spend their money, and 67% say a negative return experience would discourage them from shopping with a retailer again.

As the returns crisis continues to grow, retailers must rethink their reverse logistics strategies. By implementing sustainable and customer-friendly return policies, companies can reduce waste, enhance their brand reputation, and ultimately drive sales.
