Ali Killam, Airbnb’s Editorial Lead, identifies three key travel trends that will shape the new year: experiential travel, group travel, and venturing farther afield. “Guests are craving unique experiences that go beyond mere sightseeing,” Killam explains. “They want to immerse themselves in local cultures, attend major events, and create lifelong memories.”
Beach Destinations and Hidden Gems
Airbnb’s data reveals that beach destinations and off-the-beaten-path cities are gaining popularity. Travelers are seeking authentic cultural experiences, and cities that offer a genuine taste of local life are trending. Killam notes that cities like Houston, Texas, are becoming increasingly popular for business and conference tourism, thanks to its thriving economy and attractions like the Space Center Houston.
Surprising Hotspots
Some unexpected destinations are making waves on Airbnb’s list. Green Bay, Wisconsin, for instance, is trending due to its hosting of the NFL draft in April 2025. Travelers can explore the city’s breweries, chocolatiers, and Italian markets, as well as catch a glimpse of the Green Bay Packers in action. Another hidden gem is Bad Staffelstein, Germany, a picturesque town famous for its thermal salt water baths and scenic hiking trails.
Thailand and Japan on the Rise
Searches for Thailand have surged, partly due to the upcoming season of HBO’s hit series “White Lotus,” which will be filming in the country. Chiang Mai, one of the filming locations, is already seeing an increase in family and group travel bookings. Japan, meanwhile, is trending among family travelers and Gen Z, particularly in Kyoto, which offers a rich cultural immersion experience.
