Utilities Giant FirstEnergy: A Diversified Energy Powerhouse
A Leader in Electric Systems
FirstEnergy, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, stands as one of the largest investor-owned electric systems in the nation. With 10 regulated subsidiaries under its belt, the company has established a strong presence in the energy sector.
Transmission and Distribution: The Focus
While FirstEnergy has a small regulated generating capacity of under 4,000 MW, its primary focus lies in transmission and distribution. Although the company has been divesting portions of its transmission business, it expects transmission operations to contribute around 20% to its 2024 earnings.
Serving a Vast Customer Base
FirstEnergy caters to a massive customer base of 6 million, spanning across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other mid-Atlantic states. The company’s customer demographics break down into 2.3 million in Ohio, 1.8 million in Pennsylvania, and 2 million in other regions.
Revenue Streams
Regulated electricity distribution accounts for a substantial 85% of FirstEnergy’s total 2023 revenues. Notably, the company does not have natural gas operations, which sets it apart from its peers.
Generation Mix: A Carbon-Neutral Focus
FirstEnergy’s generation mix is comprised of carbon-neutral nuclear power (53%), scrubbed baseload coal (35%), natural gas and oil (4%), and pumped-storage hydro and other renewables (8%). However, its heavy reliance on coal generation puts the company at a disadvantage compared to its peers.
Sustainability Commitments
FirstEnergy has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, underscoring its commitment to a more sustainable future. As the company continues to navigate the evolving energy landscape, its ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial to its long-term success.
