Florida’s popularity is on the rise, and it’s not just retirees who are drawn to the Sunshine State. Young Americans are increasingly calling Florida home, attracted by its affordability, pleasant climate, and endless entertainment options.
A Top Choice for Retirees and Young Professionals Alike
With nearly 22% of its residents aged 65 years and older, Florida has one of the oldest populations in the country. However, it’s not just seniors who are moving to Florida. The state saw the largest net increase of young high-earners in 2022, with nearly 1,800 millennial-headed households earning at least $200,000 a year making the move.
A Better Quality of Life
For young professionals like Chabely Rodriguez, who moved to Tampa from New York, Florida offers a more relaxed pace of life and a higher standard of living. “I have a lot more space and my money goes a lot farther,” Rodriguez said. “I enjoy life a little bit more down South.”
Finding Community in Unlikely Places
Liz White, who moved to Naples from Philadelphia, found herself living in a retirement community at the age of 31. While it may seem unusual, White has found a sense of community among her older neighbors and has even made friends with people closer to her own age. “Because the area here is so much older, many of us young people just naturally seek each other out,” she said.
Owning a Home in the Sunshine State
Brooklyn Karasack, who moved to St. Petersburg in 2019, owns a condo and enjoys a comfortable lifestyle on her $108,000 a year salary. “I think my money goes a long way to afford the necessities and a lot of fun as well,” she said. Karasack’s experience is not unique; many young Floridians are finding that homeownership is more attainable in the state than in other parts of the country.
Weathering the Storms
While Florida’s warm climate is a major draw, the state is not without its challenges. Hurricane season can bring high home insurance costs and storm-related repairs. However, for many young Floridians, the benefits of living in the state outweigh the risks. As Liz White said, “It’s been really good to have that sense of community and have people to grow with different perspectives in life.”
