Jeff Bezos, the visionary founder of a leading e-commerce company, recently highlighted this disparity at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit. “When people talk about the good old days, that’s such an illusion,” Bezos emphasized. “Almost everything is better today than it was… with one exception, which is the natural world.” The stark reality is that human progress has come at the cost of depleting and polluting our planet’s oceans, rivers, and forests.
The Environmental Cost of Growth
The company Bezos founded is not immune to this criticism. In 2022, it emitted a staggering 70.74 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to roughly 1.1% of the entire U.S.’ total emissions. While the company is working to reduce its carbon footprint, aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2040, the impact of human activity on the environment cannot be ignored.
A Shared Perspective
Bezos’ observation echoes the sentiments of the late billionaire investor Charlie Munger, who noted that people often underestimate the significant improvements in their quality of life over time. “People are less happy about the state of affairs than they were when things were way tougher,” Munger said, reflecting on his experiences during the Great Depression.
A Bold Solution
Bezos is investing heavily in a potential solution to Earth’s natural resource deficiencies: space exploration. Through his aerospace company Blue Origin, he aims to harness the infinite energy and raw materials available in outer space. This vision is not limited to Bezos; NASA has already identified Mars as a potential source of oxygen, water, and methane.
A Different Approach
Unlike other prominent billionaires, Bezos’ goal for space exploration is not to create a multi-planetary society, but to ensure humanity’s happiness on Earth. “There is no plan B. We have to save Earth,” he emphasized. With nine successful human spaceflights under its belt, Blue Origin is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of our planet.
