From Prison to Profit: One Entrepreneur’s Journey to Cannabis Success
A Decade of Transformation
In 2009, a drug conviction led to a seven-year prison sentence for Coss Marte. Fast forward to today, and Marte is projected to rake in a staggering $12 million in legal cannabis sales. This remarkable turnaround is a testament to Marte’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit.
Conbud: A Pioneer in Manhattan’s Cannabis Industry
Marte, 39, is the founder and CEO of Conbud, one of the first fully-licensed recreational cannabis businesses in Manhattan and the first in the city’s Lower East Side. After opening its doors in October 2023, Conbud expanded to a second location in the Bronx just six months later. The business is thriving, with monthly sales of around $800,000 and a profit margin of nearly $100,000.
A Fitness Empire Born Behind Bars
Marte’s journey to success began in prison, where he developed a rigorous workout regimen to improve his health. After his early release in 2013, he launched Conbody, a fitness business that has grown to generate around $1 million in annual revenue.
Seizing a Golden Opportunity
When New York legalized recreational cannabis in 2021 and expunged past marijuana convictions, Marte saw a chance to capitalize on his experience running Conbody and his own conviction record. He applied for a retail cannabis license, investing $50,000 of his own savings and raising an additional $1.2 million from friends and family.
Breaking Down Barriers
Conbud’s startup funds covered the costs of securing a retail location, construction, payroll, and inventory. The business has created jobs for 72 people who have been “justice impacted,” providing a second chance for those affected by the criminal justice system.
Challenges Ahead
Despite Conbud’s success, Marte faces stiff competition from larger corporations and high operating costs, including rent and labor expenses. However, he remains optimistic about the future, citing the potential benefits of federal legalization and expanded banking options.
A Second Chance at Life
Marte’s rags-to-riches story is a powerful reminder of the importance of second chances. From prison to profit, his journey is an inspiration to anyone looking to turn their life around. As he reflects on his success, Marte says, “I feel blessed, man. It’s a big, big community that’s growing with us.”
