New Travel Requirement for U.S. Citizens Heading to the U.K.

If you’re planning to travel to the United Kingdom as early as this week, you’ll need to take an extra step before your trip. Starting Wednesday, the U.K. will require U.S. citizens, along with nationals from over three dozen other countries, to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA) before arriving in the country.

What Is an ETA?

An ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers from countries that don’t require visas to enter the U.K. This program was initially launched in 2024 for citizens from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Now, it’s being expanded to include many more countries.

How Does It Work?

Travelers will still need to clear immigration upon arrival in the U.K. However, having an ETA will streamline the process. The U.S. has a similar requirement for nationals from European Union countries, the U.K., and other countries whose citizens don’t need a visa to enter.

Who Needs an ETA?

You’ll need an ETA if you’re a U.S. citizen or national from one of the affected countries, unless you have a visa and are authorized to live, work, or study in the U.K. This requirement applies to everyone, including babies and children.

Applying for an ETA

You can apply for an ETA online using the U.K.’s ETA app for Android and iPhone. The application fee is £10 (approximately $12.50), which is payable by credit card. You’ll need to upload photos of your passport and yourself as part of the application process. After submitting your application, you can expect to wait around three days for a decision, which will be sent via email.

Important Details to Keep in Mind

• An ETA is valid for two years and allows for visits of up to six months.
• You’ll need an ETA even if you’re only transiting through a U.K. airport to another country.
• Later in 2025, EU countries will introduce a similar requirement for U.S. citizens and nationals from other countries with similar criteria.
