Shoji Morimoto’s life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when he was fired from his office job. His superior criticized him for lacking initiative and not contributing to the company. Little did they know, Morimoto would soon turn his lack of action into a lucrative career.

Today, Morimoto, 41, is known as Japan’s rental “do nothing” guy. He loans himself out to strangers who need someone’s company for various activities, from waiting at a marathon finishing line to being a video call companion while a client redecorates their room. His services are in high demand, with over 1,000 requests per year.
The Art of Doing Nothing
Morimoto’s approach is simple: he shows up and does nothing except what he’s asked to do. He doesn’t engage in conversations, preferring to listen attentively and offer minimal responses. His goal is not to provide therapy or advice but to offer a comforting presence.
A Pay-As-You-Wish Model
Morimoto used to charge a flat rate for his services, but he recently introduced a pay-as-you-wish model. This approach allows clients to decide how much to pay him, and he’s enjoying the uncertainty of it all.
A Social Experiment
To test Morimoto’s services, I accompanied him to a piglet cafe in Tokyo. As we sipped drinks and interacted with the adorable piglets, I realized the appeal of his service: clients can enjoy activities in social settings without feeling judged or obligated to sustain conversations.
