CATL: The Unseen Powerhouse Behind the EV Revolution

The Electric Car Industry’s Hidden Giant

A Dominant Force in the EV Market

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., better known as CATL, has an unparalleled presence in the global electric car market. With a staggering one-third of electric cars relying on CATL batteries, the company’s influence extends far beyond its Chinese roots. As the industry’s leading supplier, CATL’s reach is felt across the automobile supply chain, making it a crucial player in the world’s car industry.

A Blacklist Designation with Far-Reaching Consequences

Recently, CATL was cited by the US Defense Department for alleged links to the Chinese military, landing it on a list of blacklisted companies. While this designation only affects the company’s ability to supply to the US military, the reputational impact is harder to quantify and potentially more damaging. CATL has vehemently denied any involvement in military-related activities, calling the designation a “mistake.”

A Who’s Who of Global Automakers

CATL’s customer base reads like a roll call of the world’s top automakers, including Tesla, Ford, Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Honda. The company’s extensive presence across the globe has raised concerns about the potential disruption to the car industry should automakers need to find alternative suppliers.

Market Dominance and IPO Plans

With a market share of approximately 37% in 2024, CATL is well ahead of its Chinese rival BYD Co. The company’s dominance in the global EV battery market is undeniable, and its plans for a second initial public offering in Hong Kong later this year could raise at least $5 billion. However, the blacklisting has sent CATL’s shares tumbling, with a 6.1% drop in China on Tuesday.

A Complex Web of Supply Chains and Relationships

Citibank has highlighted CATL’s significant contribution to the US EV market, with 4% of its 2023 battery shipments headed to the US. Additionally, 35% of its energy-storage batteries were destined for the US market. The company’s relationships with US-based companies, such as Duke Energy Corp., which had planned to phase out CATL energy-storage batteries at a US Marine Corp base, are now under scrutiny.

A Shift in the Global EV Landscape

As the electric car industry continues to evolve, CATL’s blacklisting has raised important questions about the future of the global EV market. With the company’s extensive reach and influence, the repercussions of this designation will be felt far beyond China’s borders.
