Amazon Workers Rise Up: Historic Union Vote Looms in North Carolina

Unionization Efforts Gain Momentum at Amazon Warehouse

North Carolina Facility to Hold Historic Vote

In a significant development, Amazon warehouse workers at a site in North Carolina are set to vote on unionization next month, marking a crucial labor battle for the e-commerce giant. The Garner, North Carolina facility will hold the election from February 10 to 15, according to a recent post by Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE), the grassroots group driving the unionization effort.

A Three-Year Journey

CAUSE, led by current and former employees, has been working tirelessly to organize Amazon employees at the warehouse, located about 10 miles south of Raleigh, for the past three years. If the election is successful, the warehouse, known as RDU1, would become only the second Amazon site in the US to unionize.

A Rare Victory

Workers at Amazon’s largest warehouse in New York City voted to join the Amazon Labor Union in 2022, but the group struggled to negotiate a contract with Amazon. Last June, the ALU voted to affiliate with the Teamsters. This rare victory highlights the challenges faced by workers seeking to unionize at Amazon facilities.

A String of Defeats

Several union elections have been held at Amazon warehouses in the US in recent years, but employees have either rejected unionization or the results continue to be disputed in lengthy court battles. Last November, a federal labor judge ordered a third re-run election at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, after ruling the company improperly interfered in the vote.

Boosting Wages and Improving Conditions

CAUSE filed for a union election last month, citing that 30% of workers at the North Carolina site signed union authorization cards, meeting the necessary threshold to trigger an NLRB vote. Organizers are seeking to boost wages and improve working conditions, which have been a long-standing concern for Amazon employees.

Strike Action

The union filing comes on the heels of a strike by Amazon delivery and warehouse workers at nine facilities last month, aimed at pushing the company to come to the bargaining table. The action was intended to disrupt Amazon’s operations during the busiest holiday shopping period of the year.

A Growing Movement

As workers continue to push for better wages and working conditions, the unionization effort at the North Carolina facility marks a significant milestone in the labor movement. With the election just around the corner, all eyes will be on the outcome, which could have far-reaching implications for Amazon employees across the country.
