Get Ready for Tax Season: IRS Announces Key Dates and Improvements
As the new year begins, it’s time to start thinking about taxes. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the 2025 tax filing season will kick off on January 27, marking the first day individual tax returns for 2024 will be accepted and processed.
Important Deadlines to Keep in Mind
Most taxpayers will need to file their federal returns and pay any taxes owed by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. However, those affected by natural disasters may be eligible for an extension.
Improvements to the Filing Process
According to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, “This has been a historic period of improvement for the IRS, and people will see additional tools and features to help them with filing their taxes this tax season.” One of the key improvements is the expansion of Direct File, the IRS’ free tax filing program, which will now be available to eligible taxpayers in 25 states, up from 12 states last year.
Free Filing Options
In addition to Direct File, IRS Free File, which offers free guided tax prep through software partners, opened on January 10. Eligible taxpayers can electronically file returns prepared via Free File partners starting on January 27. Other free options include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly, as well as MilTax for military members and certain veterans.
State-by-State Breakdown
Participating states in the Direct File program include Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Stay Ahead of the Game
With the tax season just around the corner, it’s essential to stay informed and take advantage of the resources available to you. By understanding the key dates and improvements, you can ensure a smoother filing process and avoid any potential penalties.
