UK Aims to Become AI Superpower with Ambitious New Plan
The UK government has set its sights on becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence, with a bold new plan to increase national computing infrastructure and create a homegrown challenger to OpenAI.
Boosting Computing Capacity
At the heart of the plan is a commitment to expand data center capacity across the UK, with a target of increasing “sovereign” compute capacity by twentyfold by 2030. This will provide a significant boost to developers of powerful AI models, which rely on high-performance computing equipment hosted in remote locations.

The government will also open access to the AI Research Resource, an initiative aimed at bolstering UK computing infrastructure. This move is expected to help the UK take advantage of the potential of AI, which is seen as critical to economic growth and national security.
