New Year, New You: Shifting Focus for a Happier 2025
As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us take time to reflect on our lives and set goals for self-improvement. According to Statista, 21% of Americans aim to save more money, 19% want to eat healthier, and 17% want to exercise more. For me, it’s about prioritizing mental health.
Letting Go of Grudges
Over the years, I’ve accumulated a few grudges that still simmer beneath the surface. Whether it’s a family member or a past crush, these unresolved issues can spark anger and anxiety. But I’ve come to realize that holding onto these feelings doesn’t serve me. In fact, science suggests that releasing grudges can reduce anxiety and stress, boost the immune system, and even improve self-esteem.
Happiness expert Jessica Weiss recommends a simple yet effective technique: writing a letter to the person you’re holding a grudge against – without sending it. This physical act of putting pen to paper can release pent-up emotions, allowing you to move forward.
The Art of Active Listening
I love engaging in conversations, but I’ve noticed that I often prioritize responding over truly listening. Weiss notes that this is a common pitfall, but one that can be overcome. By asking more questions and making fewer statements, we can create space for others to share their thoughts and feel heard. This simple shift in approach can lead to deeper connections and stronger relationships.
Finding Solace in Reading
As someone with ADHD, reading can be a daunting task. However, Weiss points out that reading offers many of the same benefits as meditation, quieting the mind and promoting relaxation. To make reading a more integral part of my daily routine, Weiss suggests setting aside 20 minutes each day to read without distractions.
Sustaining Momentum
We’ve all been there – setting ambitious New Year’s resolutions only to lose steam a few weeks in. To avoid this, Weiss recommends breaking down larger goals into smaller, achievable milestones. Celebrating these mini victories can help maintain motivation and drive progress.
By focusing on these areas – letting go of grudges, active listening, and reading – I’m hopeful that 2025 will bring a sense of calm, connection, and personal growth.
