College Enrollment Sees Unexpected Uptick
A surprising turn of events has emerged in the world of higher education, as the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center has revised its earlier report on college enrollment. Initially, the center reported a decline in freshmen enrollment for fall 2024, but a “methodological error” has led to a correction: freshmen enrollment has actually increased.
Error Leads to Reversal
The mistake, which mislabeled certain students as dual-enrolled rather than freshmen, resulted in an undercount of freshmen and an overcount of dual-enrolled students. This error led to a false narrative of declining enrollment at both two- and four-year institutions, with an even steeper drop at four-year colleges where many students receive Pell Grants.
New Data Reveals Increase
The corrected data shows a 3% rise in overall undergraduate enrollment in the fall compared to 2023. Furthermore, enrollment has also increased at four-year colleges where large shares of students receive Pell Grants. U.S. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal expressed relief and encouragement at the updated data, citing consistency with increased federal aid applications.
Financial Aid and Enrollment
Some experts had warned that issues with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) could lead to fewer students applying for financial aid and enrolling in college. However, changes to the FAFSA have made it easier for more students to qualify for Pell Grants, which are awarded based solely on financial need. While there have been improvements to the FAFSA, higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz notes that there is still room for improvement.
College Applications on the Rise
The U.S. Department of Education released the FAFSA for 2025-26 ahead of schedule, aiming to improve college access. As a result, total college application volume through Dec. 1 rose 8% for the 2024-25 application season compared to the previous year.
A Rare Error
Kantrowitz, not affiliated with the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, notes that errors of this nature are rare. The center is conducting a thorough review to understand the root cause of the error and implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The final freshmen enrollment numbers will be released on January 23.
