From Sci-Fi Dreams to Reality: The Journey of Transcelestial’s CEO
Rohit Jha’s fascination with computers, space, and science fiction began at a young age. Growing up in Jamshedpur, India, he spent countless hours coding games on a secondhand computer, stargazing through a telescope, and devouring the works of Isaac Asimov. Today, the 36-year-old is the co-founder and CEO of Transcelestial, a pioneering startup revolutionizing internet accessibility through laser technology.
A Path Paved with Curiosity
Jha’s academic journey took him to Singapore, where he studied electrical and electronic engineering at Nanyang Technological University on scholarship. During this time, he worked on several groundbreaking projects, including Singapore’s first space program and indigenous satellite. His passion for science fiction and space engineering continued to intensify, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
The Banking Epiphany
After graduating in 2011, Jha ventured into banking, working in high-frequency trading at the Royal Bank of Canada. However, it was during this period that he discovered a critical issue: the internet’s limitations. He realized that the majority of the world’s internet relies on undersea fiber optic cables, which are prone to bottlenecks and damage. This led to a stark realization – the economics of internet provision are misaligned, leaving many cities and villages without adequate connectivity.
A New Frontier
Jha’s frustration with the status quo propelled him to leave banking and pursue a more meaningful path. In 2015, he quit his job, traveled, and eventually co-founded Transcelestial with Mohammad Danesh in 2016. Their vision was ambitious: to create the largest telecom company in space, leveraging laser technology to bridge the connectivity gap.
Laser-Powered Innovation
Transcelestial’s innovative approach involves using lasers to transmit data wirelessly, combining the speed of fiber optics with the cost-effectiveness of wireless technology. This breakthrough enables rapid internet deployment, reducing setup times from years to mere days. The company has already successfully demonstrated its technology at music festivals, providing enhanced internet access to attendees.
Reaching for the Stars
Transcelestial’s long-term goal is to develop a constellation of small satellites in low earth orbit, beaming internet connectivity across continents. This ambitious project aims to establish a laser-powered network, effectively dropping a fiber cable from orbit into cities worldwide. As humanity expands into deep space, Jha and his team are committed to building the necessary infrastructure for automation and potentially even human settlement.
The Future of Connectivity
Transcelestial’s pioneering work is poised to revolutionize the internet landscape, bridging the gap between the connected and the disconnected. With its sights set on the stars, this innovative startup is redefining the possibilities of high-speed connectivity, paving the way for a brighter, more accessible future.
