Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies is venturing into uncharted territory, partnering with industrial conglomerate Fangda Group Industrial to drive the adoption of digital and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the steel and aviation industries. This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in Huawei’s efforts to empower China’s conventional businesses with its cutting-edge AI and communication technologies.
Smart Transformation and Beyond
The partnership focuses on trial applications of AI large language models (LLM), the low-altitude economy, and smart transformation, among other areas. Fangda Group’s business interests span multiple sectors, including carbon, healthcare, and commerce, providing a vast playground for Huawei’s innovative solutions.
A New Era of Cooperation
Fangda chairman Fang Wei expressed his company’s desire to expand its collaboration with Huawei into the pharmaceutical business, building on the success of their partnership in aviation and steel. Huawei’s cloud chief, Zhang Pingan, emphasized the need for AI and big data technologies in both industries, highlighting the potential for growth and innovation.
Steel Industry Revamp
Fangda Special Steel will work closely with Huawei to develop a steel industry model, tackling the challenges of applying LLMs in the industry. This partnership aims to promote the deep integration of digital technology with the firm’s core steel business operations, ultimately boosting its competitiveness in the market.
Diversification and Growth
Huawei’s foray into traditional industries is part of its ongoing efforts to diversify its business, applying technologies such as cloud computing and AI to drive growth. Last year, the company partnered with Sichuan Zigong Conveying Machine Group to expand the adoption of AI in heavy industries, and established a smart car joint venture focused on autonomous driving and digital cockpits.
Overcoming Adversity
Huawei has been forced to adapt and innovate in response to US sanctions, which decimated its once-lucrative smartphone business. By reducing its reliance on foreign software and hardware, the company is rebuilding its consumer business around China-made processors, such as those used in the Mate 70 series smartphones.
Breakthroughs and Innovations
Huawei’s rotating chairwoman, Meng Wanzhou, highlighted the company’s recent breakthroughs in areas such as heat dissipation, power supplies, high-speed transmission systems, and chip reliability. With a dozen research and development laboratories, Huawei is working with partners to design semiconductors used for training AI models, including high-bandwidth memory chips.
