“Do-Re-Mi” in Salzburg: Celebrating 60 Years of Timeless Musical Magic

Celebrate the Timeless Magic of “The Sound of Music” in Salzburg, Austria

A Musical Legacy Lives On

This spring, I had the chance to visit Salzburg, Austria, and relive the magic of “The Sound of Music,” one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time. As I strolled around the picturesque Mirabell Palace, I couldn’t help but think of Maria and the von Trapp children dancing around the Pegasus Fountain, singing “Do-Re-Mi” with joy and abandon.

Commemorating 60 Years of Musical Bliss

To mark the 60th anniversary of the film’s release, Salzburg is hosting a series of themed tours and events throughout the year. From February 6, the Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron will showcase an exhibition of items related to the real von Trapp Family, as well as memorabilia and photos from the movie. A new audio guide app, narrated by Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich von Trapp in the film, will guide visitors along a trail around the town of Werfen, where the iconic picnic scene was filmed.

Immerse Yourself in the World of “The Sound of Music”

Throughout the year, the Salzburg Marionette theater will perform special shows inspired by the film’s iconic puppet scene, “The Lonely Goatherd.” If you’re fascinated by the traditional dirndl dresses worn by the women in the film, the Salzburger Heimatwerk will design a special anniversary outfit and host a one-time exhibition. On October 23, an English-speaking symposium will discuss the relevance and importance of “The Sound of Music” to Salzburg today, featuring original cast members.
