Alstom Secures Major Contract for Lille Metro Modernization
Boosting Efficiency and Comfort in Lille’s Metro Network
Alstom has landed a significant €210m contract to supply 15 additional automated metro trainsets to Metropole Europeenne de Lille (MEL). This new order builds upon the initial batch of 27 trains previously ordered by MEL, and will play a crucial role in modernizing the Lille metro network.
Replacing Ageing Trainsets with State-of-the-Art Technology
The new 52m trains, equipped with the Urbalis Fluence signalling and automated control system, are scheduled to replace the ageing VAL-208 trainsets starting from 2028. This modernisation initiative aims to upgrade the rolling stock and automated train control systems on lines 1 and 2, significantly enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Enhancing Passenger Comfort and Accessibility
According to Alstom, its rubber-tyred metro solutions will ensure that the new trains deliver increased comfort, enhanced accessibility, and better passenger information. With a capacity to accommodate up to 545 passengers, the new metros will facilitate passenger movement with their “boa” configuration, allowing unrestricted access throughout the train.
Cutting-Edge Features for a Seamless Journey
The trains will feature a range of innovative features, including multimedia displays and screens, dedicated areas for those with reduced mobility, and an integrated video protection system to ensure safety. Furthermore, the trains will be fitted with “high-performance” traction equipment to boost energy efficiency.
Autonomous Trains for a Smarter Network
The Urbalis Fluence autopilot system, which embeds the system’s intelligence directly into the trains, will be part of these new trainsets. This innovation will enhance the autonomy of the trains and the overall performance of the system, making it more efficient and reliable.
French Manufacturing Expertise
The production of these new trains will be undertaken at six of Alstom’s 16 French facilities, including Valenciennes-Petite Forêt for assembly and testing, Le Creusot for bogies, and Ornans for motors. Additional sites will contribute to the production of powertrain equipment, automated systems, and on-board computing and passenger information.
Alstom’s Commitment to Innovation and Excellence
This contract win is a testament to Alstom’s commitment to delivering innovative and efficient transportation solutions. The company’s president, Frederic Wiscart, expressed his delight at the new order, stating that the new trains will be a considerable asset for improving the network and the passenger experience.
