Warner Bros Discovery’s Restructuring Efforts

Warner Bros Discovery, CNN’s parent company, is undergoing a major overhaul. In December, the company announced plans to split its cable TV networks from its streaming and studio operations, creating two separate units. The cable TV business, including CNN, TNT, and Animal Planet, will be consolidated into a unit named Global Linear Networks.

Streamlining and Enhancing Digital Offerings

The job cuts at CNN are aimed at streamlining its cable TV lineup and enhancing its digital subscription offerings. According to CNN CEO Mark Thompson, the goal is to shift the network’s focus towards the platforms and products where the audience is increasingly present. “Our objective is a simple one: to shift CNN’s gravity towards the platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting,” Thompson stated in an internal memo.

New Streaming Service and Lifestyle Product in the Works

CNN has begun development on a new streaming service for news programming, similar to its TV product. Additionally, the network plans to launch a new lifestyle-oriented product this year. To support these digital efforts, Warner Bros Discovery has invested $70 million in CNN.

Digital Paywall and New Job Opportunities

In October, CNN introduced a digital paywall, requiring some users to pay $3.99 per month for access to its content. This move aimed to create a new digital revenue stream to offset the decline in TV viewership. Despite the job cuts, CNN plans to open up and fill at least 100 new posts in the coming months as part of its digital pivot.
