Airlines in Turmoil: Frontier Proposes Merger with Struggling Spirit
The airline industry is facing unprecedented challenges, and two budget carriers are at the forefront of the struggle. Frontier Airlines has proposed a merger with Spirit Airlines, which is currently in bankruptcy. This is not the first time the two airlines have considered joining forces; they initially announced a deal in 2022, but it was derailed by a rival offer from JetBlue Airways.
A History of Failed Deals
JetBlue’s proposed acquisition of Spirit was blocked by a federal judge last year, leading Spirit to file for bankruptcy protection in November. Despite this setback, Frontier remains committed to the merger, believing it is the best option for both airlines.
A Better Plan?
Frontier executives claim their proposal is superior to Spirit’s own plan to emerge from bankruptcy. In an email to Spirit’s board and executives, Frontier Chairman Bill Franke and CEO Barry Biffle expressed concerns that Spirit’s current plan would leave the airline “highly levered, losing money at the operating level.” They emphasized the need for swift action, stating “time is of the essence.”
Rejection and Resistance
However, Spirit’s Chairman Mac Gardner and CEO Ted Christie have rejected the deal, deeming the terms “inadequate and unactionable.” Spirit is confident in its ability to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy this quarter, having recently cut costs by slashing jobs and selling some of its Airbus planes.
The Struggle for Budget Carriers
The pandemic has taken a toll on budget airlines like Frontier and Spirit, which have struggled to adapt to rising costs and changing consumer preferences. Both airlines have been working to revamp their business models, abandoning low fares and fees for add-ons in favor of bundled perks and premium services.
A Shift in Strategy
Frontier has introduced a premium section at the front of the plane, while both airlines have eliminated cancellation and change fees for certain tickets. As the industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether a merger between Frontier and Spirit will be the key to their survival.
