Treasury Secretary Targeted: Capitol Hill Plot Foiled

Capitol Chaos: Arrest Made After Man Attempts to Kill Treasury Secretary

A shocking incident unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, as a Massachusetts man was taken into custody after attempting to kill Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Ryan Michael “Reily” English, 30, turned himself in to authorities, revealing a sinister plot to harm top government officials.

A Trail of Targets

Initially, English had set his sights on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson, but a visit to a Maryland library changed his plans. After learning about Bessent’s nomination, English shifted his focus to the Treasury Secretary.

Armed and Dangerous

English was found carrying two Molotov cocktails, a folding knife, and a lighter. He confessed to police that he intended to throw the incendiary devices at Bessent’s feet and stab him if possible. A search of his vehicle revealed more Molotov cocktails and a 750-milliliter bottle of vodka.

A Cryptic Note

A receipt in English’s pocket contained a handwritten note, expressing remorse and desperation. The message, addressed to “Judith,” spoke of feeling trapped and helpless, with references to Nazis and a desire for revenge.

A Web of Deception

English had taken steps to evade surveillance, leaving his phone at home and buying an atlas with cash to navigate his way to Washington, D.C. He wore disguises to conceal his identity while purchasing the atlas and surveilled the Capitol grounds, planning to kill at least three police officers to reach Bessent.

A Deadly Intent

The affidavit revealed that English was willing to die in the process, expressing acceptance of the possibility of suicide by cop. His actions have raised concerns about the safety of government officials and the potential for violent extremism.

Charges Filed

English faces charges of unlawful receipt, possession, or transfer of a firearm, as well as carrying a firearm, explosive, or incendiary device on Capitol grounds. His arrest serves as a stark reminder of the threats that exist in our society, and the importance of vigilance in protecting our leaders and institutions.
