“Detroit Shockwave: WNBA’s Secret Plan to Electrify the Motor City”

WNBA’s Secret Move: Trademark Filing Hints at New Team Location

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has taken a significant step towards expanding its reach, quietly filing a trademark application for the name “Detroit Shock.” This move has sparked speculation about the location of a new franchise, with Detroit emerging as a strong contender.

A Sports Town with Passion

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has submitted a bid to bring a WNBA team to the Motor City, with a star-studded ownership group including Detroit Lions principal owner Sheila Ford Hamp, former Pistons stars Grant Hill and Chris Webber, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. Gores emphasized Detroit’s passion for sports, saying, “Detroit is a sports town that loves its teams deeply and consistently shows up with unwavering passion.”

Trademark Insights

The WNBA’s trademark application is the only submission from the league since early December, according to trademark attorney Josh Gerben. Unlike other professional sports leagues, the WNBA holds the rights to all names and logos for its franchises. Gerben suggests that the filing could be a sign that Detroit’s bid is a winning one, but it may also be a precautionary measure to protect the league against “squatters” or others trying to use the name.

A Familiar Name

The Detroit Shock were a WNBA team based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, from 1998 to 2009, winning three WNBA Championships during their tenure. The franchise later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and eventually became the Dallas Wings. The WNBA’s interest in reviving the name “Detroit Shock” has sparked excitement among fans and investors alike.

Expansion Plans

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert revealed that at least 10 cities have expressed interest in launching an expansion team, with Cleveland, Kansas City, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Houston, Austin, Nashville, and Milwaukee among the contenders. Engelbert aims to add a 16th team by 2027 or 2028, marking a significant milestone in the league’s growth.

The Future of Women’s Basketball

As the WNBA continues to expand its reach, the league’s commitment to women’s professional basketball is clear. With a growing fan base and increasing interest from investors, the future of women’s basketball looks brighter than ever.
