Pickleball’s Profitable Surge: A Sport on the Rise

Pickleball’s Rise to Prominence: A New Era of Growth and Investment

The sport of pickleball is on the cusp of a major breakthrough, with its professional league, Major League Pickleball (MLP), targeting profitability by the end of this year. This rapid growth is attributed to the increasing popularity of the sport, which has seen a staggering 223% rise in participation over the past three years.

A League on the Rise

MLP, which was founded in 2021, has made significant strides in a short period. Currently, two of its 22 teams are profitable, and one has reached the breakeven point. The league aims to achieve average profitability for individual teams by 2027. This remarkable progress has sparked interest among investors, with nearly two dozen parties expressing interest in acquiring an expansion franchise.

Expansion Opportunities

For the first time in two years, MLP is offering investors the chance to purchase up to two expansion franchises, valued at around $15 million each. This presents a unique opportunity for investors to tap into the growing popularity of pickleball, which is expected to continue its upward trajectory. New ownership would not only gain equity in the team but also in the parent company, United Pickleball Association, and DUPR, the sport’s rating system.

A Lucrative Investment Opportunity

According to an investor presentation, pickleball offers a rare chance to invest in a sport with double-digit annual growth. The league is poised to capture additional revenue opportunities across sponsorship, hosting events, and local activations. With its year-round live content and events, MLP is the only pro sports league in America with a consistent stream of revenue.

A Star-Studded Investor Lineup

MLP has already attracted A-list celebrity investors, including Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Heidi Klum. The league’s growth has been fueled by a $75 million investment from private equity, PPA Tour owners, and existing MLP team owners.

A Bright Future Ahead

As MLP looks to expand its reach, the sport of pickleball is expected to continue its rapid growth. With its increasing popularity, lucrative investment opportunities, and star-studded investor lineup, the future of pickleball looks brighter than ever.
