Neighborhood Divide: Why Homeowners Feel More Connected Than Renters

The Great Divide: Renters and Homeowners’ Sense of Belonging

A recent survey by Redfin and Ipsos has shed light on a striking disparity between renters and homeowners when it comes to feeling connected to their neighborhoods. The results reveal that less than half of renters (46.7%) feel a sense of belonging in their communities, compared to nearly two-thirds (63.6%) of homeowners.

A Gap in Neighborly Interactions

This disconnect extends to interactions with neighbors. Renters are less likely to share common interests with their neighbors (38.9% versus 58.5%) and tend to avoid interactions more often (41.6% versus 33.1%). According to Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather, this can be attributed to the differing mindsets of renters and homeowners.

Investing in the Neighborhood

Homeowners, who have a long-term perspective, are more likely to invest in their neighborhoods and seek positive relationships with their neighbors. Renters, on the other hand, prioritize convenience and affordability over community, leading to a sense of disconnection.

Generational Differences

The survey also highlights significant generational differences. Younger generations, particularly millennial and Gen Z homeowners, are more likely to feel a strong sense of community (67.6%). However, millennial and Gen Z renters are less likely to share this sentiment, with only 44.4% feeling a sense of belonging.

Connecting Over Shared Interests

Millennial and Gen Z homeowners are also more likely to connect with their neighbors over shared interests (63.7%), while Gen X renters are least likely to do so (36%). Fairweather attributes this to younger homeowners being more likely to have recently chosen their neighborhoods and being more invested in their communities.

Avoiding Neighborly Interactions

Nearly half (45.7%) of millennial and Gen Z renters actively avoid interacting with their neighbors, in contrast to baby boomer homeowners, who are the least likely to avoid neighborly interactions (24.8%).
