A Cautionary Tale: Super Micro Computer’s Rally May Be Short-Lived
A Year of Turmoil
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) has experienced a wild ride in 2024. Once hailed as a promising artificial intelligence (AI) stock, concerns about the reliability of its numbers and accounting controls sent its stock plummeting. However, after hitting a low of $17.25 in November, the stock has staged a remarkable comeback, trading at around $30 recently.
New Auditor and Financial Filings
The company has taken steps to address its accounting issues, appointing a new auditor and promising to file its delayed financials by February. Investors seem to be breathing a sigh of relief, but beneath the surface, significant risks still lurk.
Growth Concerns
In the AI space, growth is king. Super Micro has benefited from strong demand for its servers and storage products as companies develop AI models. However, the company’s preliminary Q1 results, released in November, raised eyebrows. Net sales are projected to be between $5.9 billion and $6 billion, significantly lower than previous estimates. This potential miss raises questions about whether the business is experiencing a slowdown in demand.
Margin Woes
Even if Super Micro releases its financials on time, the results may not be as rosy as investors hope. The company’s gross margins remain alarmingly low, and the added overhead of implementing new accounting protocols could further erode profit margins. In its preliminary Q1 results, Super Micro’s gross margin was a mere 13.3%, still dreadfully low.
Uncertainty Reigns
With so many unknowns surrounding Super Micro, it’s challenging to predict its performance in 2025. If the company releases its annual report and quarterly filings as planned, and its numbers look strong, the stock could take off. However, if it fails to report its financials or its growth rate or bottom line disappoint, the stock could plummet.
A Volatile Stock
Super Micro is one of the most volatile stocks on the market, making it a high-risk investment. Unless you have a stomach for uncertainty, it may be wise to adopt a wait-and-see approach.
