Toyota Blasts Off into Space: A New Frontier in Rocket Production

Rocketing into the Future: Toyota Partners with Interstellar Technologies

In a groundbreaking move, Japanese space infrastructure company Interstellar Technologies has joined forces with Woven by Toyota, a division of the Toyota Group, to revolutionize the mass production of rockets. This strategic partnership is set to inject approximately ¥7 billion ($44.3 million) into Interstellar’s Series F funding, with additional investments expected in the second close.

Transforming Rocket Manufacturing

The collaboration aims to harness the automotive industry’s expertise, particularly Toyota’s production techniques, to transform rocket manufacturing into a high-quality, cost-effective, and scalable process. By applying the principles of mass production, Interstellar Technologies seeks to make space travel more accessible and affordable.

A History of Collaboration

This partnership builds upon the existing relationship between Interstellar and Toyota Motor Corporation, which has been fostering since 2020 through personnel exchanges. The alliance focuses on reducing costs, shortening lead times, and establishing a mass production system for rockets.

A Shared Vision for Space Exploration

Interstellar Technologies CEO Takahiro Inagawa emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating that Woven by Toyota is the ideal partner to help evolve rocket production from one-of-a-kind manufacturing to a scalable supply chain. This collaboration brings Interstellar’s vision of “a future where everyone can access space” one step closer to reality.

Toyota’s Ambitious Plans for Space Exploration

The announcement follows Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda’s speech at the CES trade show in Las Vegas, where he provided an update on the company’s experimental city project at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Toyoda hinted at Toyota’s interest in exploring rockets, stating that the future of mobility should not be limited to just earth or one car company.

Beyond Launchers: Toyota’s Lunar Rover Ambitions

In addition to launchers, Toyota is developing a lunar rover with Japan’s space agency for the NASA-led Artemis program. The Lunar Cruiser, developed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, is expected to launch in 2029, expanding exploration for crewed and uncrewed space missions.

A New Era of Mobility Transformation

Woven by Toyota CEO Hajime Kumabe highlighted the significance of this business alliance, which will leverage the Toyota Group’s extensive manufacturing capabilities to advance rocket production and drive mobility transformation. As the partnership takes shape, it’s clear that the future of space exploration has never looked brighter.
