The Uncertain Future of TikTok Creators
For many young entrepreneurs, TikTok has become a lifeline, providing a platform to showcase their talents and earn a living. However, with the looming threat of a ban in the United States, creators are facing an uncertain future.
From Barista to Influencer
Jack Nader, a 21-year-old from Chicago, is one such creator who has built a successful career on TikTok. With over half a million followers, he earns between $1,000 and $12,000 per month through brand sponsorships and ad revenue. However, Nader’s success is now at risk, and he’s urging his fans to find him on other social media apps before it’s too late.
The TikTok Risk
The threat to TikTok’s existence in the US has been present for years, but it intensified in April after President Joe Biden signed a law requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to divest the app by January 19. If the deadline is not met, Apple and Google will be forced to remove TikTok from their platforms in the US.
Creators in Limbo
Many creators, like Nader, are worried about losing their income streams and are scrambling to find alternative platforms. Danisha Carter, a 27-year-old creator from Los Angeles, has been posting social commentary and lifestyle videos on TikTok since 2021. She’s now downloading her videos and re-editing them for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, but she’s not yet making any money from these platforms.
The Potential Winners
If TikTok is banned, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram are likely to be the biggest winners. According to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, TikTok has about 115 million monthly active users in the US, compared to 258 million on YouTube, 253 million on Facebook, and 131 million on Instagram.
Diversifying Followings
Experts advise creators to diversify their followings across multiple platforms to mitigate the risks. Kristina Nolan, vice president of media services at marketing agency DMi Partners, says, “We’re consistently reminding them to create audience depth on other platforms.”
The Future of Social Media
The TikTok situation highlights the importance of creators having a presence on multiple platforms. As the social media landscape continues to evolve, creators must adapt to stay ahead of the game. Despite the uncertainty, many creators are viewing the potential ban as an opportunity to expand their careers and get more creative.
The Human Impact
For creators like Nader, Carter, and Boschma, the potential ban is not just about losing a platform; it’s about losing a way of life. They’ve built their careers and identities around TikTok, and the thought of starting from scratch is daunting. However, they’re determined to make the most of the situation and find new ways to connect with their audiences.
