Disney’s Box Office Dominance Continues
A Billion-Dollar Milestone
The Walt Disney Company has once again proven its prowess at the box office, with “Moana 2” becoming the studio’s third 2024 release to surpass the coveted $1 billion mark. This achievement follows the success of Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool and Wolverine” and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” Disney’s dominance is all the more impressive, considering no other Hollywood studio had a film cross $1 billion last year.
Domestic and International Success
“Moana 2” has raked in an impressive $442.8 million at the domestic box office and $567.1 million in international markets. This brings the total to over $1 billion, making it the fourth film from the Walt Disney Animation arm to achieve this feat, joining the ranks of “Frozen,” “Frozen II,” and “Zootopia.”
A Turnaround for Disney
Disney’s recent success marks a significant turnaround for the studio, which had struggled to gain traction with its animated releases in the years following the pandemic. The decision to debut several animated features directly on its streaming service Disney+ had trained parents to look for new content at home, even after theatrical closures ended and films returned to cinemas.
A Return to Form
“Inside Out 2” not only marked a return to form for Disney but also helped jumpstart the overall domestic box office in June. The film’s success, along with that of “Deadpool and Wolverine” and “Moana 2,” has contributed to Disney’s impressive haul of over $2.2 billion at the domestic box office last year, accounting for about 25% of the industry’s total.
A Legacy of Success
With “Moana 2” crossing the billion-dollar mark, Disney now boasts an impressive 32 billion-dollar movies, including three films it acquired when it bought Fox in 2019. This means Disney is responsible for nearly 60% of the highest-grossing films in cinematic history, with only 56 films having topped $1 billion at the global box office.
