The premium plan will also see a bump, rising from $22.99 to $24.99.

Netflix is not alone in this price hike. Other major streaming services, such as Disney’s apps and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max, have also increased their prices in recent years. The shift towards higher prices and ad-supported plans is a strategic move to reach profitability.

According to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, the company is confident in its upcoming content lineup, which includes exciting new series and movies set to release in 2025. This confidence is reflected in the price hike, as the company believes its offerings justify the increased cost.

International Markets Follow Suit

The price hike is not limited to the U.S. market. Netflix will also raise prices in Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. Co-CEO Greg Peters reported that the recent price increases in international markets went smoothly, indicating a positive response from customers.

The company discontinued its cheapest basic ad-free option in 2023 and introduced its ad-supported plan as a response to slowing subscriber growth. In addition to the price hike, Netflix has been enforcing a crackdown on password sharing. The company has given subscribers the option to add “extra members” to their accounts, with the cost of extra members on standard plans without commercials rising from $7.99 to $8.99.

Despite the price hike, Netflix reported a record-breaking quarter, adding 19 million paid memberships and surpassing 300 million subscribers. The crackdown on password sharing appears to be paying off, as the company continues to grow and expand its offerings.
