**Job Search Struggles: 1,000 Applications, No Luck**

A Midlife Crisis: One Man’s Struggle to Find Employment in a Competitive Job Market

At 55, Sean Tetpon thought he had it all figured out. With a successful career as a communications manager, he had worked his way up to six-figure positions at major companies. However, after being laid off twice, once in 2019 and again in 2023, he found himself struggling to get back on his feet.

Despite having applied to over 1,000 jobs in the past year, Tetpon has yet to land a new position. He suspects that ageism and intense competition in his industry are major factors contributing to his lack of success. With a family to support, Tetpon has had to make drastic cutbacks, including moving in with his mother-in-law and slashing expenses to the bare minimum.

Tetpon’s story is a stark reminder that the job market is not always as rosy as it seems. While job reports may paint a positive picture, the reality is that many people are struggling to find employment. Tetpon believes that the white-collar job market is particularly challenging, with highly qualified candidates competing for a finite number of jobs.

Despite the setbacks, Tetpon remains optimistic and continues to apply to jobs, often spending seven to eight hours a day on his job search. He has had nearly 30 interviews, but has yet to land a position. To make ends meet, he drives for Lyft five days a week, earning around $3,000 a month.

Tetpon’s experience has taught him the importance of customizing his resume and cover letter to each job application, as well as the need to take mental health breaks to avoid burnout. He believes that his age and industry are working against him, but he refuses to give up.

As Tetpon struggles to find employment, he is also grappling with the fear of not being able to retire. With his savings depleted and his 401(k) dwindling, he worries that he may have to work for the rest of his life. Despite this, he remains determined to find a job that will allow him to support his family and rebuild his savings.

Tetpon’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. In the face of adversity, he continues to push forward, driven by his determination to provide for his family and secure a better future.
